Teresa Scanlan as Miss America 2011

After the swimsuit, evening gown, talent and interview competitions, there was one woman left standing to inherit the crown from Miss America 2010 Caressa Cameron.

The winner was announced on Saturday evening at the Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino in Las Vegas. Scanlan beat 52 other young women from across the United States.

The young Nebraskan played "White Water Chopped Sticks" on the piano in the talent portion of the competition. Along with the title of Miss America 2011, Scanlan won a $50,000 scholarship. Scanlan, who recently graduated from high school, will study at Patrick Henry College. The Miss America Organization provides young women with a vehicle to further their personal and professional goals, and instills a spirit of community service through a variety of nationwide community-based programs, according to the organization’s website.

The Miss America pageant has been around for 90 years, but a Miss Nebraska had never won the title -- until last night when Teresa Scanlan was announced Miss America 2011.

At 17, Scanlan is also the youngest Miss America since Margaret Gorman, the pageant's first winner, won at the age of 16 way back in 1921.

Scanlan showed her confidence early on in the program. Producers invited past winners to participate in the show's 90th contest. George, celebrating the 30th anniversary of her win, presented roses to Scanlan after her name was read as the winner.

Pageant judges included Joy Behar ('The View'), Marc Cherry (creator/executive producer, 'Desperate Housewives'), Marilu Henner ('Taxi') and Tony Dovolani ('Dancing With the Stars.') Joy: All seem nice. I'm the one bitchy from food deprivation.

Burke could easily win next year's Miss America since she has a habit of winning and hosting live shows on ABC.
